How to Install Mods on Minecraft PE for Android
Installing mods on Minecraft PE for Android is fast and works without rooting your phone or installing extra launchers. Most Bedrock mods come as .mcpack or .mcaddon files that import in one tap.
This guide covers the full process — from downloading the file to enabling the mod in your world and fixing the most common installation problems.
What You Need Before Installing a Mod
Before installing any mod, make sure your setup is ready.
- Minecraft Bedrock Edition installed — mods only work in the official Bedrock app. Java mods do not work on Android.
- Compatible game version — most modern mods need Bedrock 1.21 or 26.x. Check the supported version on the mod page.
- Free storage space — at least 100 MB free for the mod and Bedrock cache.
- Microsoft account — only needed if the mod requires multiplayer or Realms features.
If you don’t have Minecraft yet, grab the latest Minecraft PE APK first.
Step-by-Step: Install a Mod on Android
The process takes about a minute for most mods.
- Download the mod file. Open the mod page on this site and tap the download button. The file saves as .mcpack or .mcaddon in your Downloads folder.
- Tap the downloaded file. Android opens the file with Minecraft Bedrock automatically. If a “Open with” prompt appears, pick Minecraft.
- Wait for the import. Minecraft launches and shows “Importing…” at the top of the screen. This takes a few seconds.
- Confirm import success. A green message at the top says the pack was imported. The mod now sits in your global resources or behavior packs library.
- Open or create a world. Tap Play → choose an existing world’s settings or create a new one.
- Activate the mod in world settings. Scroll to Behavior Packs or Resource Packs in the world settings menu. Find the mod and tap Activate.
- Enable Experimental Gameplay if needed. Many modern mods need this toggle on. It’s in the same world settings menu, near the bottom.
- Launch the world. The mod content is now active — new mobs, items, blocks, or mechanics show up as soon as the world loads.
.mcpack vs .mcaddon — What’s the Difference?
Both formats install the same way, but they contain different things.
.mcpack — a single pack. Usually a behavior pack or a resource pack on its own. Smaller mods often ship as one .mcpack file.
.mcaddon — a bundle. Contains both the behavior pack and the resource pack together. Most modern mods with custom mobs and textures use this format because it installs everything in one tap.
You don’t need to choose between them — just download whichever format the mod page provides.
How to Enable Experimental Gameplay
Many Bedrock mods rely on experimental features that Mojang hasn’t fully released yet. Without Experimental Gameplay enabled, these mods won’t work even if they’re correctly installed.
- Open Minecraft Bedrock and tap Play.
- Tap Create New or open an existing world’s settings.
- Scroll down to the Experiments section.
- Toggle on the experiments your mod requires — common ones are “Holiday Creator Features”, “Beta APIs”, and “Custom Biomes”.
- Save the world settings and launch.
Once experimental gameplay is enabled in a world, Mojang disables achievements for that world. This is normal Bedrock behavior — pick a separate world for vanilla survival if you care about achievements.
How to Activate a Mod in World Settings
Importing a mod is only half the process. The pack also needs to be activated in the world where you want to use it.
- Open the world settings — either before launching the world or by editing it from the Play menu.
- Find the Behavior Packs section.
- Tap My Packs to see installed packs.
- Tap the mod and select Activate.
- If a dependent resource pack is required, Bedrock prompts you to activate it too — accept.
- Save and launch the world.
Some mods only use a resource pack and skip the behavior pack step. In that case, activate the pack under Resource Packs instead.
How to Install a Mod Globally for All Worlds
If you want a mod active in every world without configuring it each time, install it as a global resource.
- Open Minecraft Bedrock → Settings.
- Scroll to Global Resources.
- Tap My Packs.
- Find the mod and tap Activate.
This works for resource packs only — texture packs, shaders, and visual mods. Behavior packs always need world-by-world activation because they change gameplay logic.
Common Mod Installation Problems
Most failures come down to a few specific issues.
- “Couldn’t import” error — file is corrupted or built for an older Bedrock version. Re-download from the mod page or check version compatibility.
- Mod imports but does nothing in-game — pack is not activated in world settings, or Experimental Gameplay is off.
- Pink-and-black textures or invisible mobs — resource pack is not activated alongside the behavior pack.
- Game crashes when entering the world — mod conflicts with another active addon. Disable everything else and test alone.
- Low FPS after activation — mod is too heavy for the device. Try a lighter alternative or close other active packs.
- “Open with” prompt doesn’t show Minecraft — long-press the file → Open With → pick Minecraft manually.
- File downloads as .zip instead of .mcpack — rename the extension from .zip to .mcpack and tap to import.
How to Remove a Mod
If a mod causes problems or you want a clean world, remove it cleanly.
- Open the world settings → Behavior Packs (or Resource Packs).
- Find the active mod and tap Deactivate.
- To delete the mod completely from your device, go to Settings → Storage, find the pack and tap the trash icon.
Removing a mod from a world that already used it can cause missing entities or items in your save. Back up the world before deleting heavy mods.
